'Arc of Justice' author to join Bridge's next Michigan Book Club discussion

Bridge’s book club is set to meet next week to discuss “Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age” by historian Kevin Boyle. This 2004 winner of the National Book Award for Nonfiction examines racism in the 1920s Jazz Age through the story of Ossian Sweet, a physician in Detroit.
We’re honored that author Kevin Boyle will join our Zoom conversation about our second reader pick. We’ll also be joined by Daniel Baxter, Wayne County's director of external affairs, who grew up in the east side Detroit bungalow where the events of this book transpired.
Baxter, who owns the home and helped spearhead its restoration, will give us a peek inside the home that now stands as a monument to the city’s early civil rights movement and may soon be a museum.

Our hour-long Zoom discussion will take place Wednesday, Aug. 26 from noon to 1 p.m. To be invited to participate in this discussion, please complete this form and we’ll send you the link via email. To learn more about how to join a Zoom meeting, please watch this short video below.
Zoom is free to use, and you can use the video call function on your computer, tablet, or phone, or you can call into the meeting using the conference line function. We look forward to discussing “Arc of Justice” with you next Wednesday.
You can join the Bridge book club by reading “Arc of Justice” between now and Aug. 26. Bridge has been posting optional discussion questions in our closed Facebook group throughout the month, leading up to the concluding discussion on Wednesday.
At the end, we’ll announce our book pick for next month, and the club will continue on a bi-monthly basis.
How to acquire the book
For Bridge Club members, we will provide an e-version of the selected book as a membership benefit. If you’re not already a member, join today for as little as $1 and support our nonprofit newsroom. Members will be sent a link to redeem their free book.
For those who are not Bridge Club members, would like to borrow the book, or would prefer a physical copy, you have other options. You can order “Arc of Justice” directly from the publisher, or download it from a Michigan library system to an e-reader or smartphone via Overdrive or Libby. The book may also be available for order from local bookstores, some of whom are offering curbside pickup.
