WE’RE HIRING: Bridge Magazine announces two staff writer openings
Driven by rapidly growing readership and philanthropic investment, Bridge Magazine has two immediate openings for experienced journalists who have a passion for covering the “how” and the “why” in Michigan’s vast and fast-moving news climate.
Michigan Cities Reporter
Bridge Magazine, a national award-winning, online publication dedicated to in-depth news and analysis of issues affecting life in Michigan, is looking for a highly skilled, experienced staff writer to serve on what we’re calling the “Michigan Cities” beat. We’re looking for someone who can weave compelling stories about both people and policy on a wide range of topics – education, municipal finance, economic growth and redevelopment, civil rights and justice issues, and poverty and human services policy. Someone who will connect the dots between the challenges and opportunities – both unique and similar – in cities large and small. Detroit will be a major area of focus, but this job will take a journalist across the state on a regular basis.
Candidates should possess and display:
• A knack for identifying trends and reporting them in human terms.
• Strong facility with public policy data and the tools to collect and manipulate it.
• The ability to generate eye-catching story ideas and packages.
• Interest in solutions-oriented reporting.
• A personal investment in Michigan and desire to help make it a better place to live.
Interested journalists should email a cover letter, resume and 3-5 clips demonstrating excellent enterprise reporting and storytelling to info@thecenterformichigan.net by Wednesday, November 6.
Compensation, which includes a salary, health benefits, vacation and a 401(k) plan, is commensurate with experience. The Center for Michigan/Bridge Magazine is an equal opportunity employer.
Michigan Computer Assisted Reporting Specialist
Bridge Magazine, a national award-winning, online publication dedicated to in-depth news and analysis of issues affecting life in Michigan, is looking for a highly skilled, experienced staff member who specializes in computer assisted reporting that can turn data into compelling enterprise journalism. We seek someone who will impact public policy through in-depth data analysis and strong storytelling in a wide range of subjects, including economic growth and job trends, tax and budget policy, K-12 education, higher education, land use, court records, criminal justice and public safety, community rankings systems and more. The successful candidate will focus much more on explanatory journalism than investigative journalism. Key to success in this position will be an ability to find and combine large data sets, and turn the results into compelling articles.
A journalist in this position must be able to work both independently on projects, and collaboratively with other staff members and freelancers.
Candidates should possess and display:
• Fluency in Excel and Access, and have background in acquiring, formatting, mapping, cleaning and analyzing data sets.
• A knack for identifying trends and reporting them in human terms.
• Strong facility with public policy data and the tools to collect and manipulate it.
• The ability to generate eye-catching story ideas and packages.
• Interest in solutions-oriented reporting.
