Detroit is, indeed, 'rising'

For the longest time, I have opened my morning paper only to find some negative articles about the city of Detroit. Indeed, these bearers of bad news heralded the city as the fattest, the angriest, the most crime-ridden, and, yes, even the city with the most STDs.

My morning ritual of reading the negative press came to a screeching halt when, to my amazement, I recently opened an article in USA Today, “Detroit rising."

“Wait,” I said to myself. “A  positive article about Detroit?” And in a national newspaper, no less. With the rejuvenated auto industry and our winning sports teams, the article suggested we are moving ahead.
Despite all the negative press Detroit has suffered, some of it deservedly so, the city always had more to offer than given credit for, such as the unique architecture dotting the landscape just prime for renovation. In addition, Detroit is a cosmopolitan city with vibrant neighborhoods attracting artists, boutique businesses and trendy restaurants.

While every city has its problems, and I am certainly not naive to ours, I’m glad to see a positive portrayal of a hard-hit city in the national media. It is important to use this growing spirit we have -- as suggested in the article, to work toward bettering a city -- badly beaten by its past.
