Opinion | Poll workers are the heroes of Michigan’s elections

Poll workers are critical to maintaining the integrity of our elections — and we need people working the polls more than ever before.

It can be easy to feel like a small cog in a vast machine, but each person who shows up to work the polls plays an indispensable role in ensuring that every vote counts. Our democracy hinges on the dedication and integrity of ordinary citizens who step up to facilitate the voting process.

Working the polls is more than just a civic duty — it's an opportunity to witness democracy in action. Every election, I am reminded of the power of the vote. From the moment the polling stations open, there's a palpable sense of community and purpose. Voters from all walks of life come together to exercise their right to choose their leaders, and it's an honor to assist in this fundamental process.

Poll workers are truly the backbone of our democracy. Without us, elections simply wouldn't happen. We set up and manage the polling sites, check in voters, issue ballots and ensure the process runs smoothly and securely. Our presence helps guarantee that every eligible voter can cast their ballot without obstruction, confusion or intimidation. We are the guardians of the democratic process, providing a critical layer of transparency and trust.

We come from diverse backgrounds, but we share a common goal: to facilitate a free and fair election and ensure that the voices of our community are heard.

Serving as a poll worker offers a deeper understanding of the electoral process. It pulls back the curtain on how our elections are conducted and reveals the meticulous care taken to uphold their integrity. This knowledge is empowering and reinforces the importance of participating in our democracy beyond just casting a ballot.

In these times, when trust in the electoral process is being challenged, the role of poll workers has never been more crucial. Our presence and dedication are vital to countering misinformation and ensuring that elections are conducted transparently and accurately. By volunteering to work the polls, we stand as a testament to the reliability and resilience of our democratic institutions.

I encourage everyone to consider becoming a poll worker. It's an enriching experience that offers a unique perspective on the democratic process and provides a tangible way to contribute to the health of our democracy. Whether you're young or old, experienced or a newcomer, your involvement can make a significant difference.

Our democracy thrives on the active participation of its citizens. By becoming a poll worker, you are not only performing a civic duty but also reinforcing the very foundation of our democratic system. Let's step up, take responsibility and ensure that our elections remain free, fair and accessible to all. Join me in making a meaningful impact in our community and our country by working the polls. Together, we can keep our democracy strong and vibrant.
